Teeth Whitening

Whitening lightens the colour of a tooth without removing any tooth structure. How many shades you gain depends on the starting colour and on the cause of the discolouration, which is why the examination comes before the gel.

What Is Teeth Whitening?

Whitening lightens the natural shade of a tooth using a peroxide gel. The gel breaks down the coloured molecules that have built up inside the enamel and dentine over the years. It does not coat the tooth, and it does not remove any tooth structure.

It is worth being clear about what it can and cannot do. Whitening changes the colour of natural tooth tissue. It has no effect on fillings, crowns, veneers or bonding, and it will not correct shape, position or wear. Where those are the concern, whitening is the wrong tool — see smile design.

Why Do Teeth Darken?

There are two separate mechanisms, and they respond differently to treatment.

Surface staining comes from what passes over the teeth: tea, coffee, red wine, tobacco and heavily coloured foods. It sits on the outside and much of it is removed by professional cleaning rather than whitening.

Internal discolouration is in the tooth itself. Enamel thins with age and the yellower dentine beneath shows through more; a tooth that has had root canal treatment can darken from the inside; certain antibiotics taken during tooth development, and excess fluoride, cause banding or mottling. These respond to whitening to varying degrees — and some, such as tetracycline banding, respond only partially.

Knowing which you have changes the plan. That is why an examination comes before a gel, and why anyone offering whitening without looking at the teeth first is guessing on your behalf.

How Is Whitening Carried Out?

In-clinic whitening follows a fixed sequence, and each step exists for a reason.

  1. Examination and shade record. Decay, failing fillings, gum inflammation and enamel wear are checked. The starting shade is recorded against a shade guide — the only way the result can be measured afterwards.
  2. Scaling. The gel does not act evenly on a surface that is not clean.
  3. Gum protection. A light-cured barrier is applied over the gum. Skipping this step is the most common cause of chemical burns to the gum during whitening.
  4. Application. The high-concentration gel is applied to the tooth surface and left for set periods, renewed if needed.
  5. Final shade record and aftercare. The result is compared with the starting shade and the rules for the first days are explained.

Whitening Methods

Three approaches, suited to different starting points:

  In-clinic (office) At home (with trays) Combined
Where At the clinic, supervised At home, with custom trays Starts at the clinic, continues at home
Gel concentration High Low High + low
Time 45–60 minutes in one session A few hours a day for 10–14 days 1 session + 7–10 days
Speed of result Visible the same day Gradual Same day, then deepening
Sensitivity risk More noticeable, short-lived Lower Moderate
Suited to Wanting a result quickly Sensitive teeth, gradual lightening Dark or stubborn discolouration

The combined approach gives the most stable result for most patients: the in-clinic session does the visible work, and the home phase deepens and settles it.

Home trays made from an impression of your teeth are not the same thing as a one-size mouthpiece bought online. A tray that does not fit lets gel onto the gum and leaves parts of the tooth untouched.

How Many Shades Will They Lighten?

Most patients see a change of two to four shades on the guide, sometimes more. Nobody can promise a specific number in advance, because the result depends on the starting shade and on what is causing the discolouration.

Yellowish teeth respond best. Grey tones — often from tetracycline exposure during tooth development — respond more slowly and less completely. A single dark tooth after root canal treatment is a different case again and is sometimes better treated from the inside.

There is also a natural limit. Whitening lightens the tooth's own tissue; it does not turn it into porcelain. A patient asking for a shade brighter than any natural tooth is asking for veneers or crowns, not whitening — and it is more honest to say that at the consultation.

How Long Does It Take?

An in-clinic session takes 45–60 minutes, and the change is visible when you leave. Where the discolouration is heavier, a second session is planned.

Home whitening with custom trays runs over 10–14 days, worn for a few hours daily. The combined protocol is one clinic session followed by 7–10 days at home.

Whitening While You Are in Turkey

Whitening fits comfortably into a short stay, which is why patients often add it to another treatment.

Allow two appointments across three to four days: examination and scaling first, then the whitening session. If you are having crowns, veneers or bonding as well, whitening must come first — the permanent restorations are then matched to your new, final shade. Doing it the other way round leaves you with restorations that no longer match.

Where custom trays are part of the plan, they can be made during your stay and the home phase completed after you travel home.

Because whitening is chemistry rather than construction, it is one of the few treatments where a remote assessment is genuinely useful. Send close-up photographs of your teeth on WhatsApp and we can tell you whether whitening alone is likely to get you where you want to be.

Is the Result Permanent?

No, and any clinic saying otherwise is overselling. Whitening is not a one-off procedure with a permanent outcome; it is a result that is maintained.

How long it lasts depends almost entirely on habits. A patient who drinks several coffees a day and smokes may see a noticeable change within six months. A patient who does neither, and keeps to their check-ups, may hold the result for two years or more.

A top-up session, or a short course with home trays, restores the shade rather than starting over. If you have custom trays, keeping them makes maintenance straightforward and inexpensive.

Is Whitening Harmful?

Whitening carried out under supervision, on healthy teeth, with the gum protected, is a safe procedure. Peroxide gels at professional concentrations do not soften enamel in any lasting way, and sensitivity is temporary.

The harm comes from how it is done, not from the concept:

  • Applying it without protecting the gum. High-concentration gel on gum tissue causes burns and white ulcer-like lesions.
  • Whitening over decay or cracks. The gel reaches the inner tissue of the tooth and causes severe, prolonged pain.
  • Repeating it too often. Whitening more frequently than advised increases sensitivity without adding to the result.
  • Unsupervised high-concentration products. Gels bought online and used in ill-fitting trays are the most common source of chemical gum injury.
  • Abrasive "whitening" methods. Charcoal, baking soda and hard scrubbing do not whiten; they wear enamel away, and thinner enamel makes teeth look darker.

This is the whole argument for having it done at a clinic: not that the gel is exotic, but that the examination, the gum barrier and the supervision are what keep it safe.

After Whitening

Sensitivity to cold in the first 24–48 hours is common and settles on its own. A desensitising toothpaste helps; if the sensitivity is sharp or lasts beyond a few days, tell us.

The first 48 hours matter more than anything else you do. Teeth are temporarily more porous and take up colour readily, so avoid coffee, tea, red wine, cola, tomato sauce, curry, beetroot and tobacco during that window.

A useful rule: if it would stain a white shirt, it will stain your teeth for those two days.

After that, normal habits resume. Drinking coffee and tea through the day is what shortens the result more than any single indulgence — sipping over hours keeps the teeth in contact with the colour.

Keep to your professional cleaning appointments. Much of what people read as "the whitening wearing off" is surface staining that a cleaning removes.

Whitening at Home

Home whitening with dentist-made trays is effective and, for sensitive teeth, often more comfortable than an in-clinic session.

An impression is taken and thin, close-fitting trays are made for your teeth. A low-concentration gel is used in them for a few hours daily over 10–14 days, and the shade lightens gradually.

The reason the trays are custom-made is not comfort alone. A close fit keeps the gel on the teeth and off the gum, and reaches every surface evenly. Universal trays and strips do neither reliably, which is why results from them are patchy and gum irritation is common.

Whitening toothpastes are a separate category. They remove surface staining through mild abrasives and can make teeth look cleaner; they do not change the internal colour of the tooth. Marketing them as whitening is a stretch of the word.

We would rather supervise home whitening than have patients order high-concentration gel online. If you already have trays from us, ask before starting a new course — the mouth may have changed since they were made.

Whitening with Fillings and Crowns

This is the point most often missed, and it causes real disappointment when it is discovered late.

Whitening does not change the colour of composite fillings, crowns, veneers or bonding. If you whiten your natural teeth, any existing restorations stay exactly as they are — and a filling in a front tooth that used to match will now be visibly darker than the tooth around it.

The sequence therefore matters. Whitening is done first, the shade is allowed to settle for one to two weeks, and only then are new restorations made to match the final colour.

If you have front fillings or crowns you are happy with, replacing them after whitening is part of the plan and part of the cost. That should be said before treatment starts, not afterwards.

Who Is Whitening Suitable For?

Most adults with healthy teeth and gums. It is postponed or ruled out where there is:

  • untreated decay, a fracture or a leaking filling;
  • untreated gum disease or bleeding gums;
  • advanced enamel wear, cracked teeth or marked gum recession;
  • persistent severe sensitivity;
  • pregnancy or breastfeeding — whitening is left until afterwards;
  • age under eighteen — this is the answer to "how old do you have to be": it is not carried out before tooth development is complete, and the decision is made on clinical assessment.

None of these are permanent barriers. Decay is treated, gums are treated, and whitening follows. The point is the order, not the refusal.

How Much Does Whitening Cost?

There is no single figure, though the range is narrower than for most treatments. The cost depends on:

  • whether the treatment is in-clinic, at home with trays, or combined;
  • how many sessions the discolouration requires;
  • whether scaling is needed first;
  • whether custom trays are made;
  • whether any restorations will need replacing afterwards to match.

That last point is the one that changes the total most, and it is the one most often left out of an advertised price. If you have visible fillings or crowns in the front teeth, ask what happens to them before you agree to anything.

We give the figure after the examination, with the plan. Photographs sent on WhatsApp let us tell you in advance what is likely to be involved.

Before & After

Teeth Whitening Before and After

The images below are examples of whitening carried out at our clinic. How many shades a patient lightens depends on the starting colour, on the cause of the discolouration and on the enamel itself, so results vary from person to person - and no result is permanent without the habits that maintain it.
